Colorado Mortuary Owners Arrested; S&S Consolidates Coach Manufacturing

S&S Coach Company, the oldest and largest funeral coach manufacturer in the United States, announced the acquisition of substantially all assets and brands of Federal Eagle Coach Company. The deal was announced June 29.

S&S is now the parent company of an extraordinary portfolio: Federal Coach/Limo, S&S, Eagle, Armbuster Stageway, Miller-Meteor, Eureka, and Superior. That is nearly every major name in funeral vehicle manufacturing under one corporate roof.

For independent funeral home operators, this raises a practical question: how many suppliers will remain in the hearses and limousines market? When a single company controls that many legacy brands, pricing leverage shifts. Existing Federal Eagle customers were told business will continue as usual, with orders and support uninterrupted during the transition.

Everstory Partners, one of the nation's largest owners and operators of funeral homes, cemeteries, and crematories, completed extensive renovations at Vista Funeral Home in Florida, modernizing the longtime community fixture.

This follows the pattern we reported in Issue #1: Everstory (formerly StoneMor Inc., taken private by Axar Capital Management in 2022) is not just acquiring properties — it is investing capital to upgrade them. The 460+ location portfolio is being actively improved, which is the private equity playbook: acquire, renovate, standardize, and optimize.

Two separate consumer fraud cases involving headstone sales emerged in the same week, both highlighting vulnerabilities in the memorialization supply chain.

In Alabama, a former funeral director was charged with first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly for accepting payments for headstones from at least 12 families and pocketing the funds. The funeral home that employed him is out approximately $200,000 but is cooperating with authorities.

In Pennsylvania, a headstone salesman pleaded guilty to federal charges of wire fraud and filing false tax returns. He faces up to 152 years in prison for failing to deliver or refund nearly $1.5 million in headstone payments.

These cases underscore why the FTC Funeral Rule exists — and why consumer advocates have pushed to expand it to cover third-party sellers like monument dealers, who currently fall outside the Rule's requirements.

The National Funeral Directors Association announced its 2026-27 officers after 1,361 members cast ballots via secure electronic voting between June 11 and June 24.

Chris E. Christian, CFSP, CCO, of Rogersville, Tennessee, will serve as President. Steve Spann, CFSP, CCO, of Dickson, Tennessee, was elected President-elect with 95.5% of the vote. Ellen Wynn McBrayer of Villa Rica, Georgia, was elected Treasurer, and Carlton Maye Jr. of Dublin, Georgia, was elected Secretary.

Terms begin immediately following the 2026 NFDA International Convention & Expo, scheduled October 25-28 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
